What is ECU Remapping

An ECU stands for Engine Control Unit and all modern vehicles are controlled by one. The ECU’s job is to keep the engine running an optimal performance choosing between high and low output depending on the conditions that the vehicle is being used, e.g. the altitude, the quality of fuel in the tank, etc. The ECU is taking on constant information from sensors in the engine bay from the engine’s fuelling, to torque valves and ignition timing – all are calibrated within the ECU.

Why should you remap the ECU?

Simple. To provide the best performance for your engine.

When manufacturers develop a vehicle, all considerations must be taken of conditions in different regions where the car will be sold. This means, ‘best performance’ for the vehicle is normally compromised to consider the different types of conditions, e.g. a hot country compared with a cold country, altitude, and emission laws set for each region.

Remapping an ECU simply means you are readjusting the parameters within the map such as fuel pressure, turbo-charge applications, pedal control, ignition advance etc to tap into the true performance of the engine before all changes were applied to the original map. Each engine will have its own unique map and finetuning the credentials can ultimately unleash more power for your vehicle and has the potential to also reduce fuel consumption. This is a completely safe process which ultimately unlocks your vehicle’s true speed and potential.

The Different types of
ECU Remapping

Stage 1 Tuning

Designed for a standard and unmodified vehicle with no hardware upgrades. A Stage 1 Remap increases power and torque while also improving fuel efficiency. Removes flat spots and gives a more responsive drive without compromising reliability.

Stage 2 Tuning

Bigger increase in power and torque than a Stage 1 Remap, efficiency will still improve but not as dramatically as a Stage 1 Tune. Often hardware upgrades are required before a Stage 2 Remap can be applied. Removes flat spots and gives a more responsive drive without compromising reliability.

Stage 3 Tuning

Up-rated hardware will be required, the numerous hardware additions require a fully bespoke remap carried out on our rolling road where parameters can be monitored in a safe and reliable way.

There are exceptions to this, where Stage 3 and above development has already been carried out on your specific vehicle. Please contact us with your spec list and we can provide a custom quote and offer advice on the required hardware upgrades.
