What is Bench Tuning?

Bench Tuning is also known by many people associated with remapping as Chip Tuning. In Lehman’s terms, this was one of the original ways that many would remap or ‘tune’ a vehicle, even before the days of utilising the OBD port. Even now, remapping through the OBD port is not always possible depending on the vehicle and state of the port. Some manufacturers place stops from the ports being modified.

How does it work?

The Bench Tuning process requires the separation of the ECU circuit board from the vehicle. Once the ECU is removed from the vehicle, it is then opened and it is this process that allows a direct connection to the internal circuit board of the ECU on your table or ‘workbench’, hence the name. There are then several different ways of communicating with the ECU. This is largely dependent on the ECU type and the microprocessor involved. Once the remapping work has been carried out manually, the ECU is put back together and placed back and connected to the vehicle.

Benefits to your car

  • A tuner can access more ‘Maps’ when the ECU is benched
  • More flexibility when tuning the software to your needs.
  • More information and settings can be accessed
  • Better performance
  • Better fuel and MPG economy

For many tuners out there, this is the preferred method and with our team of experts at hand – we are able to help with specific requirements that you may have. We will run through your options in detail and unlock your car’s performance potential.
